Panoramic (OPG) and TMJ Imaging

OPG (Panoramic radiograph)

The OPG is essentially a tomogram of the facial skeleton; is the “workhorse” film of dental and maxillofacial specialties, as multiple anatomic regions can be evaluated in one film. It is often considered a screening film that provides adequate visualization of structures with the jaws in 2-dimensions (2D).

Common Indications:

  • Wisdom tooth removal
  • Diseases of the gums and tooth supporting structures (Periodontium)
  • Multiple tooth decay
  • Malaligned teeth
  • Dento-facial trauma
  • Jaw swellings

Typically used for Temporomandibular Joint evaluation, this radiographic image is a modification of the full jaw panoramic x-ray (OPG) where selected regions of the facial anatomy i.e. the right and left TMJs are imaged in the closed and open mouth positions.

Common Indications:

  • Pain in front of the ears
  • Jaw clicking / locking
  • Reduced / Painful mouth opening
